Welcome to a Bigger Backyard

If you’re looking for a website that shows you how to be the perfect homesteader and DO ALL THE THINGS in gorgeous and excruciating detail– well, we’re probably not the droids you’re looking for.

We aren’t perfect. We’re out of shape, kind of lazy, and constantly distracted by our nerdy pursuits (Comic-Con anyone?)

But, if you want to learn how to homestead and still have time to screw around, then you’ve come to the right place. We are committed to creating a sustainable homestead that will meet our needs with the least amount of work possible.

It may not always work out the way we planned, and it won’t always be beautiful, but we (and you!) can learn from our mistakes as well as our successes. And while no homestead is labor-free, by working smart, using permaculture principles, and putting our natural resources to work for us, we hope to accomplish our goal of being self-sufficient and Eco-conscious while giving up the least amount of leisure time as possible.

Meet the Crew

Husband and wife team Martin and Jeanene have been married for over 15 years. They met in 1996 playing an old-school non-graphical RPG or MUD for those of you who remember the dark ages of the internet. At the time they lived on opposite coasts, but were both working as bartenders when they weren’t slaying trolls or casting spells.

After two years of on-line friendship, things took a turn for the romantic. Jeanene moved to the East coast where she spent the next ten years convincing Martin to move back West with her. They currently live in North San Diego County– obviously, she was succesful.

Trail Cam

In January of 2016 we set up a trail cam on our land to get a peek at what goes on when we’re not around. Turns out, it’s quite busy up there.
