Steps for the RV

Now that the RV is parked in it’s permanent spot we need to improve ease of access. Climbing in and out is hell on our old knees, especially after we’ve spent the day clearing brush, moving rocks and dragging tree limbs from point A to point B.

Also, we really need to mow.

The Plan

Install a small step for the RV as well as a pallet deck to help cut down on the amount of dirt we’re tracking into the RV.

Pre-manufactured RV steps are fairly pricey and part of that price is probably due to the fact that they fold up nice and compact for storing while the RV isn’t parked. It’s wasted money for us since we don’t need the stairs to stow away. Instead, we’re going with an inexpensive non-folding version we found at Camper’s World (savings: about $80-100)

Supplies

  • Heavy Duty Step
  • Heavy Duty Plastic Pallets
  • Deck Tiles

The pallets were free and the plastic is a good choice since they’ll be sitting direction on the dirt. However, with the way the surface is styled, we’ll be using the deck tiles to improve walkability. Deck tiles are from costco, purchased on sale and with our rewards cash back credit. So, sorta free.

Status

This project is in the Planning and the Purchasing/Gathering stages.

The next step will be to prep the area for the pallets, which will include leveling, and probably laying down gravel. After the pallets are in place, we’ll use the deck tiles to cover them and fasten the step to the pallet to keep it steady and in place.

Project History

June 5: After much trial and tribulation, the RV is in it’s spot and mostly level. It’s a big step up to the cabin, so we need a step on the outside.
